Grandma’s Sauce
INGREDIENTS
- 28oz can of crushed tomatoes (Cento San Marzano)
- 28oz can of whole peeled tomatoes (Cento San Marzano)
- 28oz can of tomato puree (Cento San Marzano)
- 6oz can of tomato paste
- 1/4 cup of olive oil
- 1/2 yellow onion diced
- 4 cloves of garlic finely chopped
- 1 handful of fresh basil leaves
- 1/4 cup of parmesan reggiano
- 3 teaspoons of salt (or to taste)
- 3 teaspoons of pepper
- 2 teaspoons of baking soda
- 1/2 stick of butter (optional)
- Meats (optional)
DIRECTIONS
Step 1
Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Sauté the chopped onion and garlic in the oil until onion is translucent, 5 to 7 minutes.
Step 2
Reduce the heat to medium-low. Put in the tomato paste and mix in with the garlic & onions. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes.
Step 3
Add whole peeled tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, and tomato puree. Stir in basil, salt, pepper, and baking soda.
Step 4
Cook at a simmer until sauce is thickened, about 2 hours. Stir every 20 minutes.
